The mission of Thadd’s Place is to companion individuals experiencing the loss of a loved one through emotional support, access to relevant education resources, and space for healing in a supportive community.
Thadd’s Place is inspired by the life of Thaddeus CowanThompson. Thadd loved John Day and was proud to call it home. He valued the members of this community, their way of life, and cherished the many friendships. In 2019 we lost Thadd after a courageous battle with cancer. After Thadd’s passing it became very apparent to his family that the community needed a place to grieve loss of all kinds. Although Thadd is no longer with us, we can continue his legacy of loving and caring for the people of John Day and beyond through Thadd’s Place. In our fourth year of operation, Thadd’s Place is currently staffed with a licensed clinical social worker, an administrative assistant, and more than 30 trained grief companions. We have been seeing grief clients in the building since February of 2021. We have over 200 visits since January, both adults and children! We are using multiple rooms each day that allow multiple clients to be seen at one time. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support emotionally and financially from our local community as well as outlying communities. We have been awarded some large grants that are aiding in program development. Our newest program is a Cancer Support program, which is for those that are battling cancer and their caregivers and loved ones. Services provided at Thadd’s Place include Individual Grief Counseling for adults and children, Peer Grief Support, multiple Grief Support Groups, and a Cancer Support Group that helps with not only emotional needs and resources, but financial needs as well.
